White is, believe it or not, a combination of all colors. This isn't the case with paint, obviously (making black as the absence of color interesting- yes?), but is the reason that when you put a prism up to a light, you see a rainbow reflecting out the other side! An uncle of mine is a professor of chemistry and taught me this as a child when I asked him what the difference was between black and white. My sister-in-law, also a scientist, recently confirmed. Bet you wanna be part of the fun discussions in our family, eh!? We're cooler than it sounds- promise!
Traditionally, it represents purity and innocence. In Asian cultures, though, it represents mourning and death.
Carte blanche, directly translated, means "white card." It indicates surrender or giving someone else full responsibility.
And I seem to remember something from a history class about painting chimneys white, but I can't recall the meaning of it. Help me out if any of you know this one!
To see what others conjure up when they think of this color, check them out below. Thanks to Natsumi for the theme of the day, and thanks to Spain Jane for the Corner View creation!

Wow ! Very informative and interesting Corner View ! This is something new that I have learned today !
ReplyDeleteI think what I'd remember about painting a chimney white is that it would have been somewhat of a wasted effort.
ReplyDeletenow that's why I love Corner View - not only do i meet and look into the lives of others but you also learn a lot.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I have learnt one more thing for today.

Great words and view! I'd love to sit in on a family lunch... I'm sure I'd learn a thing or three!
ReplyDeleteHappy Day!
In DC you are surrounded with white.
ReplyDeletei´m sure dinner time conversations at your house are really interesting! thanks! besos!
ReplyDeleteI want to know about those chimneys too now. :)
ReplyDeletemaybe the chimneys are white for a practical reason: chimneys get dirty after a while in use. So to clean them you can just (over) paint them. And use white so you can be cheep and only paint the dirty spots....
ReplyDeleteI think our "white" posts are brothers ;) Have a nice day !
ReplyDeleteNever a dull moment in your family! And for us...we learn a thing or two from visiting your blog. So thank your family for their wisdom on white (and black)! ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a great Sunday, Jeannette
