The Vineyard

One of my good friends in graduate school is a native of Martha's Vineyard-- Edgartown, to be exact. His name is Nick and he wears the original Nantucket reds that very few people understand the origins behind, and can't get enough whale polos, seersucker, or madras anything. I tease him about his undying, exclusive love for blond women. He's an exceptionally social kid and an entertainer at heart, never turning down a drink or an invitation, as it may somehow expand his network. And in line with him keeping this up, several friends and I (at least one of them is blond, probably my all-time grad school favorite-- Kelly-- and she will undoubtedly be our bow-of-the-boat candy) are going to see what it's all about. Tonight we're off to Martha's Vineyard! I haven't ever been, but I grew up on the water-- albeit in a much more humid place-- and am very much looking forward to seeing what experience my pal exchanged in place of meeting Obama last week.

My dear friend Julie is camping out at my apartment to do some language studying for work and watch my sweet little fluffball. It was going to cost a fortune to board him, or be pretty challenging to get him to someone else to take care of for the weekend and then get him back in time to get to obedience class on Monday. Now, everyone wins!

We'll all spend the night in Boston, then ferry over in the morning. Our itinerary includes sailing to Nantucket and having a good ole New England lobster boil and clam bake. We're promised to meet some cool local folks, and I'm told that Meg Ryan shops at the same grocery store. Whatever works!

Corner View : Noticing

When I moved to Asia about 5 years ago, without knowing anyone there, the language, the culture, I noticed that I was really good at taking care of things for myself. I was neater, ate well, conscientious, and other endeavors where I'm not always successful today. Now that my life is completely different-- married, pet, in grad school, working-- at the end of each day, I try to think things through and group and categorize experiences in my mind so that I remember better and return to that conscientiousness. It can be as simple as adding up what I've eaten and if I've had enough of what I should, to comparing what I noticed at work with different people and what it may be teaching me about them, and so on and so forth. I have to make a special effort to notice what doesn't happen naturally...

And since I've been out of school, have a tad bit of a summer income and definitely more free time, I'm definitely noticing all the shopping I want to do! I was so good at being even tighter than I usually am (much to my lunch-out-seeking husband's chagrin), but now I've chilled out a bit on that! I guess I'll get into my comfortable penny-pinching self again when fall brings in less income and takes away much of our free time once more... but for now... :)

Corner View : Daily

Congratulations to last week's winner of the Bliss earrings. I'll be mailing them out soon!

Now to today's topic. I wake up shortly after 5am. I check email, unless I've hit snooze a few times, in which case I get up and take my vitamins then walk/run the dog. I come home, feed the pooch then take a shower. I put on my face moisturizer since it has SPF in it and needs to dry, then I iron anything I need to, eat some breakfast, and make my lunch while my hair dries; I usually have multiple combinations of this going at the same time... serious multi-tasking (leave the iron on a part of the clothes, put the spinach on my sandwich, move the iron and take a bite of oatmeal then put the blueberries and walnuts in my sandwich container...). Boy, that's exciting. I throw my clothes on, put the dog away, and head to work (which takes about an hour). I work until evening, then come home through an hour or more's worth of traffic. I walk the dog again, then usually check in with friends, go out to meet some, cook dinner, take care of an errand or two, and try to get to bed by 10. I'm rarely successful at that, so it's usually 11 or midnight. Wake up, do it again. Not a very exciting summer, but last semester the commute was about 20 minutes and the in-between waking and sleeping consisted of homework, studying, meetings, student government, reading, and all sorts of other things I've blocked from memory :)

Looking forward to other daily reviews from other people that are undoubtedly more interesting!

Corner View : From where I'm sitting

Early in the mornin', rise into the street...

These photos were taken with my cell phone, before 6am, as I was checking e-mail and news, the way I try to do most mornings before I head to work. The curtains weren't open, the dog wasn't walked, and, well, it's just an honest view of my house in the morning when I fell asleep early the night before :)
